Description
Digraph-ar – Do you know how to teach phonics to year one students? This is an explicit direct instruction lesson that helps you to teach the phoneme /ar/ using one grapheme /ar/.
This PowerPoint lesson includes:
- phonological awareness at the beginning to identify where the /ar/ sound is within words
- spelling pattern slide
- mouth articulation slide (demonstrating how to position the mouth to say the sound)
- word reading (say the sounds and blend the sounds to say a word)
- Pictures of the words (after the word reading slide) to assist in understanding vocabulary
- sentence reading
- challenge words – multisyllabic words that are read by syllables
- word types (verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs) within sentences (and an explanation of what these are)
- editing slides (students are required to find the spelling or punctuation errors and fix them – on a SmartBoard, if you have a pen tool, or a written whiteboard)
- teacher explanation slides
Have students bring their whiteboards down onto the mat and write words after you read them!
