Phonological Awareness in Early Childhood

Description

This is a PowerPoint lesson to develop phonological awareness skills in preschool students (Kindergarten in Western Australia). Phonological awareness skills demonstrate a link to later reading and writing success. This skill is vital to develop and needs to be explicitly taught in early childhood. This PowerPoint lesson can be used in Kindergarten, Pre-Primary (foundation) and Year One. Older students who struggle in literacy can use this PowerPoint in a tutoring 1-1 session.

Phonological awareness in Early childhood – lesson includes:

  1. word awareness (how many words were spoken in a sentence, compound words and real/silly word identification)
  2. rhyme (judgment and generation)
  3. syllables (clap the syllables in 1-2-3 syllable words)
  4. Identifying initial sounds of a spoken word
  5. Identifying final sounds of a spoken word
  6. Identifying middle sounds of a spoken word

This is a revision, or consolidation, lesson that is extremely important to do in the early years. Repetition is a key teaching strategy in early childhood and also for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.

I have Year One students with learning difficulties. Every now and again I need to go straight back to basics. Thanks. The pictures are really cute but the content was great too. I am a new fan of this website. Can you make more please?
